PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects 1 in 20 women and assigned female at birth individuals.

It is a debilitating condition that severely impacts the sufferer's psychological, physical, and social well-being and can take up to 12 years to receive a diagnosis.

It is often described as a severe form of PMS.

Symptoms occur in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, between ovulation and the onset of the period and typically subside within a few days of the onset of menstruation. Meaning you only suffer from symptoms for part of the month (the few days to weeks before your period).

Symptoms include:

  • Depressed mood

  • Sadness

  • Hopelessness  ( sometimes suicidal ideation)

  • Paranoia

  • Mood swings

  • Increased sensitivity to rejection

  • Frequent and sudden crying

  • Conflict with family, friends and coworkers

  • Changes in eating habits; binge eating, overeating & craving salty foods

  • Fatigue

  • insomnia or excessive sleeping

  • Bloating

  • Muscles and joint pain

Due to the cyclical nature of PMDD and its predominantly severe psychological symptoms, it can be hard to distinguish it from other psychiatric conditions for both the patients and health professionals.

As someone who has lived with PMDD and has a deep understanding of the disorder, I offer support to many individuals who are also struggling with PMDD.

My one-on-one sessions prioritise empathy, non-judgment, and congruence to help you foster these qualities within yourself. PMDD is often misunderstood and under-diagnosed but I provide supportive interventions and coping strategies throughout the luteal phase and beyond. I can also support family and loved ones of people suffering with PMDD.

Additionally, I offer a research-informed psychoeducational skills group for sufferers and their loved ones, which aims to increase awareness of the condition and promote self-compassion.
